The non-winter weekend meets list has followed the same basic pattern now for several years and it is sorely in need of some new ideas. The winter meets tend to get a regular rejig so they're ok.

What we want to do is start again and get some fresh ideas from the members. We're looking at about 12 meets in the April - October period, bank holidays included. Fixed points are the Annual Dinner sometime in June and no doubt Tim will be organising a Mingulay/Pabbay trip again at the end of May/ beginning of June. So what about some ideas for the rest? Yorkshire bolt-clipping? Seacliffs? Galloway? Cairngorms rock? The Coe? Pembroke? Camping or huts are both fine for accommodation.

The catch is you have to be keen enough on the meet to lead it. This is pretty easy, just booking a hut/campsite, advertising the meet using Gareth's brilliant template and then cajoling people into going.

We can build up a running list of ideas in this thread.

So far:

26 May - 2 June  Mingulay/Pabbay Tim Catteral  (need Tim to ok this)

17th June  Annual Dinner  John Dalrymple

To help with dates, local school holidays and bank holidays are listed here

So lets have some ideas...

cheers

John

John,

Poor response so far, so here goes:
  • Yorkshire Dales: some limestone sport and gritstone crags around Skipton.  Plenty of walking and biking opportunities.  I know we had a good weekend north of Horton when I was a student at Leeds Uni.
  • West Peak District: maybe as a change to the standard trip to Stoney.  Roaches and Hen Cloud would be more accessible, but in reality these can be accessed from our regular haunt in Stoney for those who have ticked every route on Stanage.
  • Arran.  Never been, but looks good from what I've seen on the interweb.
  • Skye.  Enough said.
  • Cheviots: I understand there is a nice bunkhouse at the bottom of the College Valley.  This gives drive-in rights, and a short walk to the crags in Henhole.  Good walking and biking around there too.

I'm already resigned to running the Peak trip again, but if this morphs into something else, no problem.

Any other ideas anyone?

Gareth

Well I was thinking of a Galloway meet sometime after the end of the nesting season. It'd need to be camping I think.

A trip to Pembroke sounds good. Or North Wales again. Would be good if that could be the early May bank holiday since it's a long drive and worth going for a couple of days then.

I would also fancy a trip to Yorkshire where we used to camp at Malham. Didn't go there this year since it's a bit far for a day trip.

Yeah to the Peak meet! I don't mind where we go climbing. I agree with Gareth, the hut in Stoney is quite convenient and nice.

Never been to either Arran or Skye, so I'm easy. Would this have to be a bank holiday trip?

I'd be happy to head a meet if you're still looking for leaders.

Arran's a good idea for a bank holiday, not too far.

You haven't tried mid Wales, Lleyn, Meirionydd and all that.
Devon/Cornwall hasn't been on the club list for a long time since Tim stopped going to Devon or telling everyone he was going.

South west would be ace, except it's a bit of an ordeal getting there. You need a Bank Holiday and the roads on a Bank Holiday are flipping dire.

Mid wales is an idea for next year though.

When I was living in Gateshead, I used to take a week off in the summer to go down to Cornwall.  We can have a week long summer trip down there, can't we?
What about abroad?  Nobody's led any overseas trip for yomps.  Martin Cooper told me the club used to go to the Alps in the summer.  Not just alpine stuff.  Multi-pitch rock routes and mountain biking, kayaking; all in one.  I went to Slovenia in winter a couple of years ago.  Rock climbing in the summer there should be pretty good.  Font is good for Easter and Queen's celebration in May alike.  What about my proposed trip to Jersey in Easter?  From the initial research I've done, it's worthwhile short holiday destination.  What about Mallorca, El Chorro, Verdon, Loften, Turkey?  All you need is to take a look at some Rock Fax and other guidebooks in shops to whet your appetise.  Loads of ideas.

Amazingly, we're all well aware that there's climbing in Font/Alps/Jersy/Spain/Turkey/Dolomites etc. We don't need to look at a Rockfax guide for that, or to whet appetites because as you're well aware members are going abroad on a regular basis.

Having said that, an Alpine meet would be classy for next year, anyone up for organising it?

I await with baited breath....

Why wait til next year?  This year's summer hasn't passed yet.  Plenty of time to plan to go the Alps.  Still good 4 months ahead.

As I said, I await with baited breath.

Anyone want to lead an Alpine meet then? It would need to be starting on either the 3rd or the 10th of June.

Actually, now I think of it thew original post on this thread pointed out "The catch is you have to be keen enough on the meet to lead it...."

So you'll be leading the meet then Kin, yes? ;)

I am keen definitely.  I've just been walking with some Munro baggers in Glen Shiel way.  Munro bagging really doesn't interest me.  I thought to myself, Alpine 4000ers would be a much better objective.  I've done 2 and a bit 4000ers.  Some way to go yet.  Bring on the Alps!  Bring on 4000er bagging!

Been talking about this in the pub-post-wall tonight. It's definitely a go-er. I'll be in touch later this year. When's the best time?
