You may or may not be aware that Sunderland climbing wall is due to host the first ever north-east dry tooling competition on Saturday 11th of February 2012. This event has been planned to introduce novice north-east climbers to dry tooling, as well as allowing experienced winter climbers a chance to try out their skills. The day will be a fun packed event with the emphasis on participation – not competition.
To allow for complete beginners, we have a set of categories using simulation indoor axes (Schmoolz – www.schmoolz.com) which includes adult male and female beginners, and junior male and female beginners. For the experienced winter climber, we will have 10 dedicated dry tooling routes involving a whole host of exciting obstacles to tackle.
The event has strong sponsorship with Gravel, Scarpa, Mountain Equipment and other local outdoor companies, with over £1500 worth of prizes – everyone wins a beanie simply by registering! To round the day off, we have an evening lecture by Greg Boswell – the UK’s most prolific winter climber (free to all registered participants)

To get people started, we are running free Schmoolz and Ice Axe taster sessions at Sunderland Wall on Friday evenings, 6-8. All equipment is provided, normal wall entry fee is applicable.
This is a great opportunity to try something new, and guaranteed to be a good day all-round.
