So What Do We Get Up To? PDF Print E-mail

The NMC is a diverse club with many members. Our members enjoy climbing from almost-beginner level to international competition standard.

We have an active "meets diary" which includes Wednesday evenings throughout the year, indoor and out, weekend meets are also scheduled across the year.

Throughout the winter we have regular slide shows on the Wednesday evenings after the wall session. Recent speakers have included Alan Hinkes, Leo Holding, John Dunne, Johnny Dawes, Dave Birkett and Mick Fowler.

The club has also become involved in organising local climbing competitions including the Allcord Open in 1995, the Crimp for Crimbo in 1996 and the Boulder for Fun in 1998.

The club has long leases on a pair of cottages in a beautiful setting by the Bowderstone, Borrowdale in the Lake District. The smaller of the two is always available for members and their guests, whilst the larger one is reserved for the sole use of the club on several weekends in the year, for instance our barbecue meet on the August Bank Holiday.

However, the cottages don’t look after themselves and we do have two working meets a year, where members help with general maintenance tasks. Don't be fooled though, the working meets are not all work and no play!!! Members using the huts are encouraged to attend these meets.

To become a full member we ask that you attend a minimum of three meets and be proposed and seconded by two other members. There is a real advantage to you in doing things this way, it gives you a chance to get to know a few faces (the names will come later  ). It also gives us a chance to get to know you too. Get to know us before you hand over your membership fees!

Advantages of being a full member include insurance with the British Mountaineering Council's scheme through the club's affiliation; Summit Magazine; you may hold keys to the cottages, and several outdoor equipment shops give discount, 15% at one particular shop.

Our members are of all ages and abilities, but share a common enthusiasm for climbing, the hills and mountains. If you haven't achieved the modest qualification for membership, or aren't sure you want to become a full member, you can become a 'prospective' member for a year, come to club meets and functions and receive our quarterly newsletter and other information. So, if you feel like joining the Northumbrian Mountaineering Club, come along to some meets - information on the next few forthcoming meets is on the homepage - and bring along a membership form with the top bit filled in.
