Our members enjoy climbing from almost-beginner level to international competition standard. We have an active “meets diary” which includes Wednesday evenings throughout the year, indoor and out, weekend meets are also scheduled across the year.
To become a full member we ask that you attend a minimum of three meets and be proposed and seconded by two other members. There is a real advantage to you in doing things this way, it gives you a chance to get to know a few faces and it also gives us a chance to get to know you too.
Advantages of being a full member include :-
- Insurance with the British Mountaineering Council’s scheme through the club’s affiliation
- Summit Magazine & County Climber
- Discount at many shops, climbing walls and more!
Our members are of all ages and abilities, but share a common enthusiasm for climbing, the hills and mountains. If you haven’t achieved the modest qualification for membership, or aren’t sure you want to become a full member, you can become a ‘prospective’ member for a year, come to club meets and functions and receive our quarterly newsletter and other information.
So, if you feel like joining the Northumbrian Mountaineering Club, come along to some meets - information on the next few forthcoming meets is on the community page – and bring along a membership form.
You can download our New Members Guidebook below, this has a collection of useful information to help you get the most out of your membership.
Becoming a member gives you access to a large variety of discount schemes both locally and regionally. Most outdoor retailers will offer discounts to BMC members on production of a valid card (NMC membership card). With an average of 10% off, you’ll quickly recoup your membership cost.
Below is a list of Climbing Walls and local shops which give special discounts exclusively to NMC members.

Applying For Membership
Membership of the NMC is open to anyone who wants to climb. We can’t take absolute beginners, but if you’ve been on an “introduction to climbing” course and can tie into a harness and can belay safely then you’re welcome to come along. There are great indoor walls locally where you can learn the climbing basics.
Full membership requires that you have attended 3 NMC meets, and that you have a proposer and seconder for your application from current NMC members. Your application can then be considered for approval at the next NMC committee meeting. You do not need to be a prospective member to apply for full membership if you meet these requirements. This all sounds very old fashioned and formal, but we need it to be able to offer members BMC insurance.
Prospective members can upgrade to full membership at any time, provided they meet the full membership requirements. Upgrade fee is £10.00 if upgrading during the 6 months, or £25.00 if upgrading after the 6 months has expired.
If you’ve still got questions, or you’ve read it all and want to know more then get in touch with our Membership Secretary via our contact page. There’s a lot of info on other areas of this site to help you find out more about this club.
