Public Transport

Borrowdale can be a nightmare to drive through but it is possible to access many of the high peaks from the cottage using public transport. In winter the Borrowdale Rambler, Service 79, runs hourly from Keswick to Seatoller and back starting around 7.30 am until 9.00 pm weekdays and 9.30 am to 5.30 pm on Sundays. In summer this service increases to half hourly. The Keswick Launches on Derwentwater run clockwise and anticlockwise around the lake. The nearest landing stage to the cottage is at Lodore and there are stages down the sides of the lake close to the fells as well as one in Keswick. There are three a day each way from December to mid March and 7 a day from mid March to November. Timetables are available in the cottage.

Open Monday to Friday 9 am to 1 pm, Saturday 9 am to 4 pm and Sunday 9 am to 1 pm in winter. In summer the store is open until 5 pm on Monday to Saturday and 4 pm on Sunday. The shop stocks groceries and household items, chilled goods, wines and beers and newspapers. It also sells maps and guides, camping accessories, gas bottles, pre-packed coal and local gifts.

The Riverside Bar serves a wide range of real ales and malt whiskies and is open from 11 am to 11 pm daily except Sunday when it closes at 10.30 pm. A typical range of bar meals is served from 12 noon to 2 pm and 6.30 pm to 9 pm.

Real ale pub serving home cooked food. Bar open all day from 11 am (12 noon on Sundays) except Monday to Thursday in January when it is closed from 3 pm to 6 pm. Food is served from 12 noon to 2 pm and 6.30 pm to 9 pm with last orders for meals 8 pm. Booking strongly advised. Open everyday from 10 am to 4 pm in February to October and from Wednesday to Sunday in November and December. Hours extended to 6 pm in summer. Specialities include lamb stew, Herdie burgers, home made cakes and gluten free foods. Sells packs of burgers, sausages and sausage rolls for barbeques and picnics. Will provide homemade soups and stews to take away for evening meal for £3 per person if ordered by 10 am on the day. Will also serve full breakfast if booked by 8 pm the previous evening.
